How to Fight Against Corruption in the Extractives Sector

From research to action using NRGI corruption diagnostic tool

The pervasive nature of extractives sector corruption is widely acknowledged by civil society, governments, international organizations and businesses. While there is agreement on the existence of the problem, the question of how to address corruption is still ever-present. Many civil society actors have engaged in anticorruption efforts, but it can be difficult to know where to start. This is why NRGI developed an extractives corruption diagnostic tool.

First developed in 2021, NRGI’s corruption diagnostic tool is an adaptable, step-by-step process designed to help anticorruption actors identify and understand major corruption issues in the extractives sector of their country or region, prioritize which issues are most important to focus on, and then build and implement action plans for reforms to address these issues. The process emphasizes collaboration across stakeholders, both to strengthen understanding of the most pressing issues and to build buy-in for reform. Newly relaunched, NRGI has incorporated new insights and research to make this tool as effective as possible.

During this webinar, participants will hear about different experiences from civil society actors engaged in anticorruption efforts in extractives. NRGI will present the new version of its diagnostic tool, highlighting examples of diagnostics conducted so far, when and how anticorruption actors–especially civil society organizations–can use it, the opportunities it represents, and the challenges faced. And finally, participants will discuss opportunities and ideas to strengthen anticorruption engagement in their countries.
