Aida Diop

In Senegal Aida supports the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) and civil society actors, advocating for transparency and accountability in the oil and mining sectors, providing technical assistance and analysis to the emerging hydrocarbon sector, and spurring public debate on the energy transition and its impact on Senegal’s extractive industry and the broader economy.

A geologist specializing in governance, gender and environmental management, Aida was the only woman in her university class. She is a founding member of Women in Mining Senegal and African Women in Mining and was selected as one of the “100 Global Inspirational Women in Mining” (WIM100) in 2020. Over more than a decade she has worked on various strategic portfolios related to extractive industry management and governance and has been involved in large national and African mining public policy reforms. She has conducted projects in collaboration with institutions such as the European Union, AWIMA, the African Union, ECOWAS, WAEMU, OSIWA, UN WOMEN, UNDP, VLF-CECI, FAO, OSIWA, USAID, and the British, Canadian and French embassies in Dakar. She is an alumna of NRGI’s Francophone Africa Regional Extractive Industries Knowledge Hub course and its executive oil, gas and mining governance course at the University of Oxford’s Blavatnik School of Government. She was also the a researcher for the 2021 Resource Governance Index in Senegal.

Aida holds a master’s degree in natural sciences and geology from Cheikh Anta Diop University and in quality, safety and environment from Polytechnic School of Dakar. She also holds certificates in mineral and energy economics from Australian National University and leadership in extractive and African development from Cape Town University. She speaks French and English.
