Tanzania is rich in natural resources, including gold as its current primary source of foreign exchange and gas as the main source of domestic power generation. But the government’s plans to expand investment in gas in a world that is shifting away from fossil fuels requires deeper consideration.

Tanzania has an opportunity to leverage its abundant transition minerals, tap into regional cooperation and create new industries and jobs. NRGI works to help the country realize these benefits through inclusive and transparent governance practices.

NRGI collaborates with Tanzanian officials, policymakers, parliamentarians and civil society actors to bridge gaps in revenue mobilization and management, and promote a better understanding of the energy transition. NRGI advocates for open civic space and public consultations, and for addressing uncertainty in policies and laws. NRGI’s Tanzania program aims to increase institutional capacity and also strengthen beneficial ownership regulations to ensure that Tanzanians benefit from the country’s natural resources.
